Germany: Altmaier praises adoption of coal exit law as 'historic milestone'

German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier announced that Germany has reached a "historic milestone" after the adoption of the coal exit law and the structural strengthening act, during a press conference in Berlin on Friday.

The minister described the adoption of both acts to be the "law of the century to end the use of coal," and considered that Germany to be taking a "decisive step" towards the success of climate protection, and that "the country is creating "a new economic dynamic for the affected regions."

According to Altmaier, Germany will invest 40 billion euros ($45 bil) on people and areas by 2038, as well as an additional adjustment allowance for workers "to make the structural change positive," he said.

The minister declared that the lignite-fired power plants will be completely removed off the grid by the end of the 2020s, while the old blocks in western Germany will be switched off by the end of the 2020s. The newer blocks are expected to be closed in the 2030s, and the brand new ones at the end in 2038 at the latest.

Altmaier emphasised the "trend-setting decision" that have been made, shows that the government is "very serious" about making the energy transition and the protection of the climate "successful."
