Peru: Rapid COVID-19 tests conducted on elderly and caregivers in Lima

Peru's Ministry of Health and the Municipality of Lima conducted approximately 300 rapid COVID-19 tests in the city centre on elderly people and their carers, on Friday.

The initiative, which is part of the "Lima Cares for You" campaign, also includes other tests to rule out diseases such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes, which could complicate the medical prognosis for people who may be infected with COVID-19.

The mayor of Lima, Jorge Munoz, said that these campaigns will continue in other vulnerable districts on the outskirts of Lima.

"It is a great need because the virus is with us, it is living with us and we have to be very careful, and in that care, the testing has a fundamental value to be able to trace the virus, so we can know how they were infected and where this contagion comes from and be able to attack the outbreaks in that area," Munoz said.

The city of Lima has registered more than 160,000 cases of COVID-19 and 4,652 related deaths. Peru has the fifth most coronavirus cases in the world, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, with a total of 292,004 infected and over 10,000 deaths with the virus.
