Serbia: Vucic slams "pro-fascist" protesters after storming of parliament

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic addressed the nation, from Belgrade on Wednesday, hours after violent clashes erupted at a protest outside the parliament, sparked by the announcement of a new coronavirus curfew. Vucic called the protest "an aggressive political protest" organised by right-wing groups, which, according to him, call themselves pro-fascist.

"Yesterday, even though some tried to justify it by using the coronavirus story, you were witnesses to an aggressive political protest," said Vucic, whose Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) triumphed in the parliamentary elections on June 21.

"The extremists, largely belonging to the right-wing and - as they would call themselves - pro-fascist groups, attacked the Serbian parliament, they entered inside the Serbian parliament, which are at least two serious felonies. Over the course of multiple hours, they were brutally attacking the members of the Serbian police forces; they insulted them, they stoned them, beat and kicked them in all possible ways," he added.

Summing up his press conference, Vucic said that Serbia will survive the pressure from "abroad", and urged citizens to adhere to discipline and responsibility. Meanwhile, another protest was announced for Wednesday evening.

On Tuesday, Vucic said the curfew would be re-imposed in Belgrade starting from Friday and there will be a ban on any kind of gatherings with more than five people. He also announced mandatory vaccinations for over two million people in Serbia starting from Autumn.

The Serbian capital is currently the worst-hit city in Serbia. At least 13 people have died with coronavirus nation-wide in the past 24 hours, and 299 new cases have been discovered.
