Archaeologists have uncovered a tower comprising over 400 skulls near the site of the Templo Mayor at the location of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, in today’s Mexico City. Experts were seen inspecting the skulls in the Mexican capital on Saturday. Archaeologists have information about the skulls due to Spanish chronicles recorded at the time of the conquest of the Aztec Empire. The tower is believed to comprise the skulls that Spanish conquistadores were documented as being afraid of when they captured the capital city under Hernan Cortes. The skulls include those of women and children, indicating the tower may have been a place of sacrifice rather than just a grisly collection of defeated enemy warriors as had previously been thought.
