USA: 2020 hopeful Warren calls for breaking up tech-giants at SXSW

Estados Unidos, Austin
10 marzo 2019 a las 3:22 GMT +00:00 · Publicado

Democratic US Senator for Massachusetts and 2020 Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren proposed the breakup of US tech giants, including Amazon, Google and Facebook, while speaking at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin on Saturday.

"Amazon does something besides providing the platform," Warren said. "They also suck out an incredible amount of information about every buyer and every seller, and then make the decision to go start a competing coffee making-selling outfit, and drive out of business everybody else who is in that space."

She added "My view on this is: it's a little like baseball. You can be an umpire, a platform, or you can own teams, that's fine. But you can’t be an umpire and own one of the teams that's in the game. So the principle here is break those apart," adding that "if you work for one of the teams, you compete like every other team in America."

The conversation led by TIME Editor Anand Giridharadas is part of "Conversations About America's Future," a series with talks with leading US political leaders.

The annual SXSW Festival, which showcases the best of film, music and interactive platforms, runs from Friday, March 8 to Sunday, March 17.
