Switzerland: IOC to begin long-term sample storage for pre-games testing

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that it would begin storing samples of its pre-Olympics testing programme for up to 10 years to allow for re-testing.

"We think we can really have a stronger programme and a more deterrent anti-doping programme," said IOC President Thomas Bach at a press conference in Geneva on Thursday.

The measures will bring pre-games samples in line with samples taken during the competition.

Many tests were returned positive years later during re-tests ordered by the IOC. In some cases, athletes were stripped of their medals.

The athletics world was rocked this week by a scandal involving long-distance running coach Alberto Salazar, who received a four-year ban for doping violations by the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

Bach also backed the investigation by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) into allegations of data manipulation by Russia's Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA).

"We are just waiting and have confidence in WADA to follow up on this," he said.
