Russia: Butina vows to become ‘voice’ for the wrongly accused after her release *EXCLUSIVE* *PARTNER CONTENT*

Maria Butina, a Russian national convicted of being an unregistered foreign agent in the US, said she had “to become the voice for those who are wrongly accused,” while speaking during an exclusive interview with RT Russian in Moscow on Saturday.

“Today I think how to continue my fight. Because I can tell you that my return is not the end of this whole story. On my part it is the beginning. Because I think that if I don’t take any actions and just say that the case is dead and buried… I just don’t have the right to do that. Because it is not the glory I’d like to have. But as it has already happened, today I have to become the voice for those who are wrongly accused and being treated in bad way,” claimed Butina.

She went on saying that US citizens “should very seriously think of what is happening in their own country,” adding that “if the relations between two countries will be based on friendship between people” then “everything will be good.”

Commenting on the details of her arrest, Butina mentioned she had “never changed any passwords or deleted any files” on her computer after the search and “did nothing” and “voluntarily provided” the authorities with all the documents the required.

“I have nothing to do with all these sex stories. How am I supposed to live with it? And then they apologized. But what I am supposed to do with that? Because I think that such statements…I was really amazed and upset by the fact that the judge did nothing with that. The only statement she did was when she said: ‘It took me five minutes to understand that the messages you presented as evidences were chatting between two friends.’ Besides, it happened in Russia and had nothing to do with the USA. It is an absolute absurdity. But I expected that she’d stick up for me as a woman, for my honour and dignity” Butin stated.

Butina departed from Miami's airport after she was released from prison in Tallahassee, Florida on Friday after having served 15 months of an 18-month sentence.

Butina founded the Russian gun-rights organisation Right to Bear Arms in 2011 and was involved in the National Rifle Association (NRA), a powerful gun-rights lobby in US politics. She moved to the United States on a student visa in 2016 and was arrested on July 2018 on charges of being an unregistered foreign agent of the Russian Federation, of which she was convicted in April 2019.
