Poland: WADA chief hails rebuild of Russian anti-doping programme

Polonia, Katowice
05 noviembre 2019 a las 13:19 GMT +00:00 · Publicado

Departing World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) president Craig Reedie hailed the rebuild of the Russian anti-doping agency into the "fully operational national anti-doping organisation it is today." He made the comments during a speech at the World Conference on Doping in Sport in Katowice on Tuesday.

"With help from partners, WADA has helped re-build the Russian anti-doping agency into the fully operation national anti-doping organisation it is today, ensuring that the anti-doping programme could resume effectively across that massive and sports-passionate nation," he said.

Reedie also admitted that his organisation had not been equipped to deal with the scale of the Russian doping affair when it surfaced. "What the Russian doping scandal taught us above all was that when it erupted, we were not equipped to deal with such a large scale programme."

He said the key for WADA now was to continue listening, learning and implementing more effective strategies and processes in collaboration with its partners.

Incoming president of WADA Witold Banka also addressed the conference, saying that any party that violates the rules, and acts against the idea of clean competition, should be "severely punished."
