Russia: Too early to talk about sanctions as RUSADA has 21 days to appeal – Sports Minister

Russian Sports Minister Pavel Kolobkov commented on the recent decision by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to hand Russia a four-year ban from major sporting events, pointing out that it is too early to talk about sanctions against Russian sports during a press conference in Moscow on Monday.

"The Russian anti-doping organization has 21 days to prepare an answer. The answer is quite simple - whether we agree with this decision or disagree. If our anti-doping organization does not agree with this decision, then WADA, within a fairly short period of time sends, a statement of claim to CAS,” Kolobkov added.

According to the minister, Russia has “fairly good prospects” to change WADA’s decision which bans Russian athletes from participating in international competitions under the national flag for four years.

The Minister of Sports said that Russia has done everything possible to "resolve this situation" and has complied with the critical requirements of WADA. Kolobkov also noted that in recent years Russia has been working together with WADA to improve the anti-doping system in the country.

“We essentially reformed the entire system, we have new laboratory management. This was done together with WADA advisers. They worked here for two years, and over the years we have done an incredible job,” the Russian minister said.

Kolobkov mentioned that about 9,000 samples have been taken annually from athletes, adding that “WADA does not have any questions about our work with athletes," and suggested to make additional tests for athletes.

WADA unanimously decided to back the recommendations by the Compliance Review Committee (CRC), in accordance with which Russian athletes will be forbidden from competing under their flag at world championships and major sporting events for at least four years, amongst other punishments for alleged interference with anti-doping data.

WADA’s Executive Committee stripped RUSADA of compliance status at a meeting in Lausanne on Monday. Russia was banned for four years from participating in major international competitions as well as lost an opportunity to host them.
