Russia: Punishment without evidence ‘new standard of sanctions in sports’ - Russia's Olympic Committee chief

Russia's Olympic Committee (ROC) chief Stanislav Pozdnyakov claimed that “punishment without evidence seems to become a new standard of sanctions in sports” while speaking at the press-conference in Moscow on Monday.

"The fight against doping should be held strictly in accordance with the law and without any compromises. The perpetrators must bear full responsibility but the law cannot turn into a whip for the innocent ones or be applied selectively based on national, ideological and, what’s is worse, political reasons," Pozdnyakov said.

The ROC chief noted that "the decision to agree or disagree with the instructions of the WADA Executive Committee will be made by the supervisory board of the Russian anti-doping agency, which will meet within the next ten days. Before the meeting of the supervisory board, representatives of RUSADA, ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) or RPC (Russian Paralympic Committee) are not authorized to speak on the issue of consent or disagreement."

Pozdnyakov also opposed the set of restricting requirements towards “clean” Russian sportsmen: "These instructions, in addition to their punitive and humiliating nature against the ‘clean’ athletes, will never contribute to the restoration of compliant status of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency, of course, we will protect and defend our rights and the rights of our ‘clean’ athletes.”

"We will do our best to make the Olympic team appear in Japan under the colours of the Russian tricolour and in accordance with the Olympic charter," stressed the ROC chief.

WADA unanimously decided to back the recommendations by the Compliance Review Committee (CRC), in accordance with which Russian athletes will be forbidden from competing under their flag at world championships and major sporting events for at least four years, amongst other punishments for alleged interference with anti-doping data.

WADA’s Executive Committee stripped RUSADA of compliance status at a meeting in Lausanne on Monday. Russia was banned for four years from participating in major international competitions as well as lost an opportunity to host them.
