Italy: Salvini seeks partnership with far-right parties ahead of EU elections

Italy, Milan
April 08, 2019 at 15:44 GMT +00:00 · Published

Italian Interior Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini met with far-right political representatives in Milan on Monday, to discuss a possible alliance of nationalists before the European parliament elections next month.

"We are working on a new European dream. Nowadays the European Union represents a nightmare for many citizens and countries, not a dream," said Salvini. "The agreement between the Christian Democrats and the Socialists evidently brought us to this situation of poverty, uncertainty and dispute, " he added.

Monday's event, titled "Towards a Common Sense Europe," saw the participation of Jorg Meuthen (Alternative fur Deutschland - AfD), Olli Kotro (Finns Party) and Anders Vistisen (Danish People's Party).

"We're doing it with movements that are an alternative to those who have ruled Europe in the last decades," Salvini said. "The goal is to win, is to be the most important, the most numerous, those with the most innovative ideas."

For Vistisen, the aim of the project would be to "defend the national State's right to find their own path and the path that is right for the people who live in these countries."
