Female toy soldiers join ranks of the 'Little Green Army'

Female soldiers are starting to appear in the ranks of the 'Little Green Army' toy soldier range. Soldier figurines manufacturer BMC Toys is releasing the iconic toy after several requests from fans.

The toy soldier range was seen under assembly at a factory in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, giving a glimpse of what is expected to hit toy battlefields in the near future.

A number of customers, including veterans and a six-year-old girl, reportedly approached the company in writing to question why female soldiers weren't included as part of its product line.

BMC Toys owner Jeff Imel explained that most of the toy designs have so far been based on expectations from the World War II era. "Most of the toys were based in kind of like what we think of World War II of TV and movies, which of course is very male dominated, also marketed for boys, so they never really thought about it, I don't think," he said.

"Now is a good time to bring a version of that toy, that unfulfilled Christmas wish from decades ago, we'll bring it full circle and a lot of those women are gonna be buying them and passing them to their younger members of their families, kind of like completing that circle of wish fulfilment there," Imel added.
